Favignana
Land area and geographical position: 19,38km²; length
9km (between Punta Sottile and Punta Marsala); width 4,3km
(from Punta Faraglione along the axis of Montagna Grossa).
Coastline 33km. Maximum altitude Montagna Grossa or Santa
Caterina: 310m above sea level. Position: 37° 55' latitude
North and 12° 19' longitude East.
Distances: from Trapani 9,17 miles (17km), from Marsala 7
miles (13km).
Population: Favignana is the seat of the municipality with
the same name and includes the islands of Levanzo
and Marettimo
(total population 4,574). Favignana itself has 3,539 inhabitants.
There are two islets in the channel between Trapani and Favignana:
one is called Maraone and is flat and deserted whilst the
other is Formica, also flat but contrary to Maraone this little
speck of land has some buildings and stores, which are used
during the “Tonnara”.
